Family of John James Curtis

1-John Curtis was born in 1778 in Wotton, Bedford, England and died on 23 Jun 1844 in Woburn, Bedfordshire, England at age 66. John married Frances (Fanny) Cave on 13 Oct 1801 in Wotton, Bedford, England. Frances was born in 1778 in Elstow, Bedfordshire, England and died on 1 Aug 1818 in Bedfordshire, England at age 40. They had seven children: Daniel, Joseph, James, William, Levi, Mary and Thomas.

2-Convict Thomas Curtis was born on 4 Oct 1812 in Wotton, Bedford, England, was christened on 18 Apr 1813 in Wotton, Bedford, England, and died on 26 Mar 1889 in the New Town Charitable Institution. Thomas was charged with night poaching armed with a gun while living at Ampthill, Bedfordshire in 1840 and convicted of house-breaking and stealing in Jan 1842. He was transported on the Marquis of Hastings, leaving in Jul 1842 for Van Diemen’s Land.

Thomas had a relationship with Mary Ann Haywood, daughter of George Haywood and Mary Ann Lines.

Mary was born on 1 Apr 1843 in Paddington, England and died on 6 Nov 1926 in Fingal, Tasmania at age 83. She is thought to have arrived on the passenger ship City of Hobart in 1859.  Mary married or had a relationship with John Brown. John was born about 1803 and died of influenza on 8 Sep 1860 in Fingal, Tasmania aged about 57. Thomas Curtis was the informant.  John was a brickmaker and Thomas a labourer, possibly working for John. Thomas appears to have cared for the pregnant widow after the death of her husband. John and Mary Ann had three children: Elizabeth and Mary Ann and John James.

Elizabeth Brown was born on 2 Nov 1856 in Fingal, Tasmania.

Mary Ann Brown was born on 10 Jun 1859 in Fingal, Tasmania.

John James Brown was born, after the death of his father, on 11 Mar 1861 in Fingal, Tasmania and died on 16 Jun 1943 in Launceston General Hospital, Launceston at age 82. He was raised as John James Curtis.

Mary next had a relationship with convict Thomas Curtis, son of John Curtis and Frances (Fanny) Cave.

Thomas Curtis and Mary Ann Brown (Haywood) had four children:

They also raised John James Brown as John James Curtis. 

The birth record for Henry Curtis on 30 Mar 1865 names the father as Thomas Curtis, labourer and the mother as Mary Ann Brown, formerly Haywood. The birth record for both Mark Curtis on 7 Jan 1868 and for Levi Curtis on 22 Sep 1870 names the father as Thomas Curtis, labourer and the mother as Mary Ann Curtis, formerly Haywood.  No marriage record has been located.

 

3-John James Curtis (Brown) was born on 11 Mar 1861 in Fingal, Tasmania and died on 16 Jun 1943 in Launceston General Hospital, Launceston at age 82. John married Roseanne Tidyman, daughter of James Tydeman and Louisa Denner, on 4 Nov 1885 in St Peters Anglican Church, Fingal, Tasmania. Roseanne was born on 14 Mar 1868 in Fingal, Tasmania and died on 12 Apr 1889 in Campbell Town, Tasmania at age 21. They had two children: John James and Thomas Henry.

4-John James Curtis was born on 29 Jul 1886 in Fingal, Tasmania and died on 3 Apr 1887 in Fingal, Tasmania.

4-Thomas Henry Curtis was born on 31 Jan 1888 in Fingal, Tasmania, died serving his country in the First World War on 6 Oct 1917 in Belgium at age 29, and was buried in Divisional Collecting Post Cemetery Extension (Plot II, Row Q, Grave No. 4), Boesinghe, Belgium.

Thomas married Mary Ann Hefford on 17 Sep 1913 in St Andrews Church Launceston. Mary was born in 1894 and died in 1979 at age 85. They had four children: Thomas Henry, Claude Adolphous, Charles James and Gordon Robert.

John next married Emma Louisa Cocker, daughter of Joseph Cocker and Emma Agnes Jones,  on 15 Jun 1891 in St. Peter's Church Fingal. Emma was born on 13 Mar 1870 in Launceston, Tasmania, was christened on 10 Apr 1872 in Launceston, Tasmania, died on 19 Jan 1939 in home, 36 Margaret Street, Launceston at age 68, and was buried on 20 Jan 1939 in Carr Villa C11/296. They had nine children: Albert James, Fanny Matilda, Ethel May, Frederick Lesley Wilmot, Evangeline (Eva) Alice Maude, Amy Grace, Percy Tasman, Lucy Lavinia and Emma Irene. Their story is told here:

Mark married Florence Mary Godfry Balmorth on 5 Apr 1893 in Fingal, Tasmania. Florence died on 14 May 1906 in Fingal, Tasmania. They had six children: Alfred James, Hubert Frederick, Arnold Mark, Zillah May, Alice and Lionel Thomas.

4-Alfred James Curtis was born on 13 Jan 1895 in Fingal, Tasmania and died on 7 Jul 1958 in Hobart, Tasmania at age 63. He served in the First World War. Alfred married Eva Alice May King, daughter of Albert Henry Miles King and Mary Jane Turner, on 31 May 1919 in Hobart, Tasmania. Eva was born on 31 Jul 1901 in Longford, Tasmania and died on 30 Nov 1964 in Hobart, Tasmania at age 63.

4-Hubert Frederick Curtis was born on 10 Oct 1897 in Fingal, Tasmania and was christened on 24 Apr 1968 in Apollo Bay, Victoria. Hubert married Kathleen Clara King on 31 Mar 1920 in Hobart, Tasmania. Kathleen was born in 1897 and died on 30 Jan 1975 in Tea Tree Road, Tasmania at age 78. They had three children: Frederick Edward, Dorothy and Allan.

5-Frederick Edward Curtis. Frederick married Gladys Mildred Simnett on 15 Mar 1941 in Richmond, Victoria. Gladys was born on 17 Nov 1919 in Melbourne, Victoria and died on 9 Dec 2002 in Melbourne, Victoria at age 83.

4-Arnold Mark Curtis was born on 6 Apr 1900 in Fingal, Tasmania, died on 24 May 1900 in Fingal, Tasmania, and was buried in the Fingal Anglican Cemetery.

4-Zillah May Curtis was born on 3 May 1901 in Fingal, Tasmania. Zillah married Oscar William Wakefield, son of Jacob James Wakefield and Catherine Grace Louisa Ryan, on 10 May 1923 in Hobart, Tasmania. Oscar died on 13 Oct 1929 in Royal Hobart Hospital, Hobart, Tasmania.

4-Alice Curtis died in as a child.

4-Lionel Thomas Curtis was born on 12 Oct 1903 in Fingal, Tasmania. Lionel served in the Second World War.  He married Anne Isabel Gough on 23 Feb 1927 in the Registrar Generals Office, Hobart.

3-Elizabeth Curtis.

3-Levi Curtis was born on 22 Sep 1870 in Fingal, Tasmania and died on 26 Sep 1937 in Launceston at age 67. Levi married Mary Ann Westman, daughter of James Westman and Eliza Haley,  on 21 Jan 1892 in Fingal, Tasmania. Mary was born on 3 Mar 1867 in Fingal, Tasmania, died on 19 Oct 1950 at age 83, and was buried in New Anglican Cemetery , Fingal. They had seven children: Thomas Henry, Florence Eliza, Isobel Kate, Hazel Mary, William Levi, Leslie and Eileen Grace.

4-Thomas Henry Curtis was born on 17 Apr 1892 in Fingal, Tasmania. He served in the First World War.

4-Florence Eliza Curtis was born on 1 Sep 1894 in Fingal, Tasmania and died on 10 Aug 1929 in the TB Sanatorium, New Town, Hobart, Tasmania at age 34.

4-Isobel Kate Curtis was born on 17 Mar 1897 in Fingal, Tasmania.

4-Hazel Mary Curtis was born in 1898 in Fingal, Tasmania and died in Jun 1987 in Glenorchy, Tasmania at age 89. Hazel had a relationship with an unknown person. They had one son: Lyall Keith.

5-Lyall Keith Curtis was born on 7 Sep 1916 in Fingal, Tasmania.  Lyall was raised as the son of his grandparents. He served in the Second World War and was onboard a transport ship off Sumatra when it was sunk. He became a Japanese POW and returned to Australia in 1945.

Hazel married Clarence Edward Rayner, son of Edwin Arthur Rayner and Hannah Alma Kingshott,  on 26 Jan 1922 in the Registrar Generals Office, Hobart. Clarence was born on 6 Mar 1892 in New Norfolk, Tasmania and died on 17 Feb 1950 in Hobart, Tasmania at age 57.  Another name for Clarence was Montague Clarence. They had one daughter: Valma Joan.

5-Valma Joan Rayner was born on 1 Nov 1925 in Hobart, Tasmania and died in 2002 in Frankston, Victoria at age 77.  Valma married Eric Stuart Parker on 7 Apr 1951 in East Malvern, Victoria. Eric was born on 8 Dec 1923 in Melbourne, Victoria and died on 17 Apr 2004 in Sale, Victoria at age 80. He served in the Second World War.

Hazel next married Wilfred John Wood, son of William John Wood and Emma Rebecca Munday. Wilfred was born on 30 Jan 1898 in Hobart, Tasmania and died on 24 May 1954 in Glenorchy, Tasmania at age 56.

4-William Levi Curtis was born on 24 Jul 1899 in Fingal, Tasmania and was buried in Fingal Anglican Cemetery.

4-Leslie Curtis was born on 3 Dec 1902 in Fingal, Tasmania. Leslie married Kathleen Lucy Reid, daughter of Joseph Reid and Emma Rawlings, on 7 Jul 1925 in St David's Cathedral Hobart. Kathleen was born on 21 Oct 1902 in Oatlands, Tasmania. They had one daughter: Eileen Dawn.
