James Triffit and Mary Higgins
1-Convict ↑James Triffit was born on 11 Jun 1769 in Whixley, Yorkshire, England and died on 3 Apr 1853 in New Norfolk at age 83.
In 1789 James, a farmer, was caught with a bottle of stolen rum and a cork screw, at Beverly Races. He was sentenced to transportation for seven years and left Portsmouth on 27 Mar 1791 on board the third fleet ship Matilda with 229 other male prisoners. On Norfolk Island he accumulated 38 acres of land, during this time he married Mary Higgins who had arrived as a convict on 7 August 1790 aboard the ship Lady Juliana. He was also employed by the colonial administration as a constable. James and Mary Higgins and their two sons left Norfolk Island on the City of Edinburgh on 2 Oct 808 for New Norfolk, Van Diemen’s land. James and his sons were granted allotments at Back River.
James married convict ↑Mary Higgins on 22 Apr 1812. They had two children: James and Thomas.
