Roderick Gordon Douglas

1-Robert Douglas.  Robert married Marian St Clair.  They had a son: John. 

2-John Douglas was born in 1699 and was christened on 18 Aug 1699 in Haddington, East Lothina, Scotland. John married Agnes Rossel.  They had a son: Patrick.

3-Major Patrick Douglas was born on 18 Mar 1722 in Fowlis Easter, Perthshire, Scotland and died on 28 Jun 1779 in Portsmouth Garrison Church, Hampshire at age 57. Patrick married Catherine Eastwood on 25 Aug 1747 in St Mary's Church, Rowner, Hampshire. Catherine was born on 1 Jul 1724 and died in 1788 at age 64. They had a son: William (Billy).

4-Admiral William (Billy) Douglas was born on 30 Apr 1749 and died on 2 Dec 1817 at age 68. William was Admiral of the Blue Squadron, R.N., Port Admiral at Yarmouth and subsequently Chatham, Kent. He commanded the Stately 64, in expeditions against the Cape of Good Hope 1795 and 1796. One of his daughters married Capt Mathew Barton Bradby, (son of Rear Admiral Bradby, d1809) who died when the ship he was on was struck by lightening off Spithead, 5th May 1831.  William married Ann Weatherall.  They had several children, including: Peter John and Henry Osborne.

5-Rear Admiral Peter John Douglas R. N. was born on 30 Jun 1787 and died on 17 Dec 1858 at age 71. Peter married Lydia Moriarty about 1813. Lydia was born in 1794 and died on 2 Aug 1855 at age 61. They had two children: Ellen Forrest and Roddam Hulke.

6-Ellen Forrest Douglas was born in 1816 and died on 2 Nov 1846 at age 30.

6-Roddam Hulke Douglas was born on 19 Jul 1817 in Fareham, Hampshire, England and died on 2 Jul 1902 at 69 Elphin Rd Launceston at age 84. He was educated at the English College, Caen, France. He migrated to Van Diemen's Land on the barque Persian in 1832. He was a pioneer of the Dunorlan district near Deloraine, gaining experience on his uncle Captain Moriarty's property. Roddam was a member of the Westbury Council and was appointed as a Justice of the Peace in 1857. He ran a coach service from Westbury, and later Deloraine, to the Plough Inn, Charles Street, Launceston and return. He also spent fourteen years in the Evandale district. He married Mary Langslow on 3 Dec 1839 a Hatton, Middlesex, England.

Roddam married Mary Langslow on 3 Dec 1839 in Hatton, Middlesex, England.  They had a son: Onslow Gordon.

7-Onslow Gordon Douglas was born on 4 Aug 1861 in Westbury and died on 17 Sep 1943 in Westbury at age 82. Onslow Gordon Douglas, born at Westbury, was the thirteenth child of Roddam Hulke Douglas and his wife Mary Selina Langslow. He was educated at Horton College, Ross. In 1880 he was articled to the firm of Douglas and Collins, in 1885 was admitted to the Bar, and in 1890 became a partner in his uncle's firm. In his younger days Onslow played football and cricket. He was a member of numerous groups including the Northern Athletic Association, Northern Cricket Association and Horticultural Society. Onslow married Kate Frith on 11 Mar 1885 at St George's Church, Battery Point. He died on 17 Sep 1943 in Melbourne, Victoria.

 Onslow married Kate Frith on 11 Mar 1885 in Hobart. Kate was born in 1863. They had three children: Roderick Gordon, Greta Kathleen and Colin Langslow.

8-Roderick Gordon Douglas was born on 1 Jan 1885 and died on 17 Oct 1959 at age 74.  Roderick married Ila Alice Findlay, daughter of Percy Alexander Findlay and Alice Emily Jones, on 3 Feb 1916 in St John's Church, Launceston. Ila was born on 3 Apr 1890 in Launceston. They had four children: Roderick Norman, Jean Margaret, Winifred Ila and Kathleen Patricia.

9-Roderick Norman Douglas was born on 7 Dec 1916 in Cypress St. Launceston. Roderick married Kathleen May Walters.  They had five children: Robert Stanley, Peter James, Brian Roderick, Anthony John, and Julie Ann.

9-Jean Margaret Douglas was born on 22 Jul 1918 in 14 Erina St Launceston and died on 30 Jul 1996 at age 78.  Jean married John Bingham.

9-Winifred Ila Douglas was born on 28 Jan 1922 and died on 1 Feb 1992 at age 70.  Winifred married Reginald Walter Harris, son of Walter Eardley Harris and Melinda Jane Symons. Reginald was born on 15 Mar 1929 and was christened on 15 Mar 1929. They had four children: Christopher Reginald, Philip Andrew, Rosalyn Margaret and Alan Gordon.

9-Kathleen Patricia Douglas was born on 19 Mar 1925.  Kathleen married Cyril Vernis Simmonds.

8-Greta Kathleen Douglas was born in 1891.

8-Colin Langslow Douglas was born in 1894.  He served in the First World War and died at Gallipoli on 7 August 1915.

5-Captain Henry Osborne Douglas was born in 1788 and died in 1821 at age 33. Henry married Eleanor Crabtree.  They had two children: Adye and Henry.

6-Sir Adye Douglas was born on 31 May 1815 and died on 10 Apr 1906 at age 90. Adye Douglas had three sons and a daughter in the 1840's. He married Martha Matilda Collins in 1858, but they had no children. In 1873, he married Charlotte Richards, and they had a daughter Eleanor, before she died in 1876. In 1877, he married Charlotte's sister, Ida in Adelaide, and they had four sons, and four daughters.

6-Henry Douglas was born on 21 Nov 1813 in Thorpe-Next-Norwich, Norfolk, died on 16 Feb 1887 in Launceston at age 73, and was buried on 18 Feb 1887 in St. George, New Ground, Tasmania. Henry migrated to Van Diemen's Land aboard the barque Persian, arrived 1832, with brother Adye licencee of Cameron's Run, near Romsey, Port Philip district 1839-1843, pioneer Forth district, later settled in Port Sorell district and Deloraine. M.H.A. 1869-1871. Henry married Janet Whyte. Janet was born on 10 Apr 1837 in Ellerslie, Campbell Town. They had a son: Henry William.

7-Henry William Douglas was born on 1 Sep 1843 in Launceston, Tasmania.  Henry married Jane Franklin Gunn on 22 Jul 1869 at Launceston.  They had a son: Morton Osborne.

8-Morton Osborne Douglas was christened on 27 Feb 1880.  Henry married Susanna Elizabeth Adams at St Johns Church of England, Launceston on 13 Jan 1904. He served in the First World War and died at Gallipoli on 6 Aug 1915. They had a son: Kenneth Morton Douglas.

9-Kenneth Morton Douglas was born on 2 Aug 1910 and died on 11 Jan 1961 at age  50.  Kenneth married Marion Beaumont Gibson. Marion was born on 31 Aug 1904 and died on 21 Mar 1985 in Launceston at age 80. They had one son: Alastair Stephen.

 Ila Alice Findlay


1-Henry (Harry) Findlay was born in 1844.  Henry married Jane Watson on 5 Apr 1866 in Launceston. Jane was born in 1846 in Launceston. They had a son: Percy Alexander.

2-Percy Alexander Findlay was born on 28 Jun 1866 in Launceston.  Born and educated in Launceston, he travelled to England where he received training from Collard & Collard the famed pianoforte manufacturers. On his return he was employed by Arthur Munnew at his music warehouse and formed a partnership with him eventually taking over the business in 1907, changing the name from Munnew and Findlay to Findlays Pty Ltd. He then expanded into the wireless business and set up 7LA, the first radio station in Launceston, which exists to this day. Percy was interested in orchestral and band music, and was once a cornet player in the City Band. A staunch Anglican, he took part in the St John's Sunday school and children's festival work. For 25 years he was prominent in St Aiden's Church choir.

He had been a member of the Lodge of Hope, was a keen bowler and follower of football and cricket. He visited his orchard at Hillwood every weekend. Percy married Alice Jones, the daughter of Thomas Jones of 'Mona', Frederick Street, Launceston, on 17 April 1889. They had nine children. Percy died 6 Jun 1945 aged 78, his business having spread across the State. Alice died on 26 May 1950 aged 84. See The Examiner 27 Jan 2007, page 26.

Percy married Alice Emily Jones, daughter of Thomas Jones, of 'Mona', Frederick Street, Launceston, on 17 April 1889 in Launceston.  They had eight children: Algernon Percy, Norman Arthur Munnew, Selwyn Harry, Gwendoline Lillis, Lorna Lyttleton, Thelma Lyttleton, Nancy Jean and Ila Alice.

3-Algernon Percy Findlay was born on 17 Mar 1892 in Launceston.

3-Norman Arthur Munnew Findlay was born in 1984.

3-Selwyn Harry Findlay was born 12/21987.

3-Gwendoline Lillis Findlay was born on 2 Jan 1903 in 29 Lyttleton St. Launceston and died on 4 Oct 1987 in Launceston at age 84. Gwendoline married Carl Vivian Crawford on 16 Jun 1926. Carl was born on 19 Jun 1900 in Launceston and died on 16 Nov 1977 in Launceston at age 77.

3-Lorna Lyttleton Findlay was born on 17 May 1906 in 29 Lyttleton St. Launceston.

3-Nancy Jean Findlay was born on 6 Jan 1910 in 30 Erina St. Launceston.

3-Ila Alice Findlay was born on 3 Apr 1890 in Launceston.  Ila married Roderick Gordon Douglas, son of Onslow Gordon Douglas and Kate Frith, on 3 Feb 1916 in St John's Church, Launceston. Roderick was born on 1 Jan 1885 and died on 17 Oct 1959 at age 74. They had four children: Roderick Norman, Jean Margaret, Winifred Ila and Kathleen Patricia.

4-Roderick Norman Douglas was born on 7 Dec 1916 in Cypress St. Launceston, died in 1976 at age 60, and was buried on 25 Feb 1976 in Cornelian Bay, Hobart.  Roderick married Kathleen May Walters.  They had five children: Robert Stanley, Peter James, Brian Roderick, Anthony John and Julie Anne.
