Alfred Miles and Elizabeth Spice

1-Convict Alfred Miles, son of Ann, was born on 30 Jan 1819 in Spirtafields, England and died on 22 May 1867 in 252 Elizabeth Street, Hobart, Tasmania at age 48.

One of only three surviving children of Alfred and Anne Miles, Alfred was born on 30 January 1819 in Spitalfields, London. His father was a horsehair weaver and wigmaker. Alfred was sentenced at Middlesex Sessions to seven years on 3rd March 1834 for larceny - stealing a pair of shoes and a teapot. He was single, and described by the Surgeon as orderly, with a good hulk report. His trade was as a women's shoemaker, at which he had spent two years. At the time of his transportation he stood just 4' 11.5" tall with light-brown hair, grey eyes and was thickly pock-pitted.

He was transported at the age of 15 with 239 other convicts on a new ship, the 447-ton William Metcalfe, built in Sunderland in 1834. The Master was Edward Philipson and the Surgeon-Superintendent Henry G Brock. The ship left Portsmouth on the 25th May 1834 and arrived in Hobart on 4th September 1834, taking the relatively short time of 102 days. On arrival, the young Alfred was appropriated by Mr O'Donnell of Elizabeth Street, to work at his trade as a ladies' shoemaker.

Alfred married Elizabeth Spice, daughter of Thomas Spice and Mary Loyd, on 11 Jan 1847 in Bethesda Chapel, Hobart. Elizabeth was born on 20 Sep 1829 in Hobart, Tasmania, died on 16 Jul 1922 in 160 Goulburn Street, West Hobart, Tasmania at age 92, and was buried on 18 Jul 1922 in Cornelian Bay, CB1/05017-4. They had ten children:

2-Hannah Louisa Miles was born in 1866 in Hobart, Tasmania. Hannah married Thomas James Chaplin on 22 Sep 1887 in Hobart. Thomas was born on 4 Apr 1859 in Colchester, Essex, England and died on 13 Sep 1920 in 17 Cimitere Street, Launceston, Tasmania at age 61. They had seven children: Thomas Macquarie, Alice Federal, Emma Louise, Julia Elizabeth, Maud Mira, Bertha Irene and Molly Irelan.

3-Thomas Macquarie Chaplin was born on 8 May 1895 in Strahan and died on 23 Mar 1977 in the Launceston General Hospital at age 81. Thomas married Dorothy Marjoram Burke, daughter of Michael Burke and Annie Maria Theophila Crothers, on 6 Sep 1920 in Holy Trinity Church Presbytery, Westbury, Tasmania. Dorothy was born on 16 Jan 1896 in Launceston, Tasmania and died on 23 Mar 1977 in Launceston, Tasmania at age 81.  Another name for Dorothy was Madge. They had two children: Bett Joy and Thomas Geoffrey.

4-Bett Joy Chaplin was born on 17 Jul 1923 in Launceston and died on 17 Feb 1932 in Launceston at age 8.

4-Thomas Geoffrey Chaplin was born on 4 Jan 1928 in Launceston and died about 2002 in Launceston aged about 74.

3-Alice Federal Chaplin was born on 12 Jan 1901 in 64 Cimitere Street, Launceston, Tasmania.

3-Emma Louise Chaplin.

3-Julia Elizabeth Chaplin.

3-Maud Mira Chaplin.

3-Bertha Irene Chaplin. Bertha married Ralph Eugene Symonds.  They had one daughter: Beverley Jean.

4-Beverley Jean Symonds was born on 5 Oct 1922 in Launceston. Beverley married Rendal Max Collins, son of Jacob Collins and Mildred Alice Day, on 16 Mar 1946 in St. John's Church of England, Launceston. Rendal was born on 28 Jul 1924 in Ulverstone, Tasmania and died in Aug 2011 at age 87. They had four children: Gregory, John Rendal, Suzanne Jeanette and Robert Ian.
