The Hobart Town Courier of Friday 5 July 1832

It is with sincere regret, that we have this week the pain to record, the death of our much esteemed friend, William Thomson, Esq, artist of Hobart-town. He died suddenly on Friday evening the 29th ultimo, at the early age of 31 years, to the universal regret of all who knew him. Though of a delicate constitution, and periodically troubled with an asthmatic, complaint, owing to a severe cold which be caught when a child only 5 years old, he was not apprehended to be in any immediate danger, His funeral was celebrated on Tuesday, and the body was followed to the grave in the Presbyterian burial ground, by a very long train or mourners, the Rev. Mr. Macarthur and the Rev. W. Bedford, having both delivered extempore prayer before the corpse left the house. Mr. Thomson, was possessed of very superior talents as an artist, and has done great justice to several of our characteristic views in this island, some of which we have had the pleasure to commemorate into our Hobart-town almanack. His loss will be long and severely felt in those families that have been in the habit of enjoying, his visits and the benefit of his experienced talents as a teacher.

A print of the first greyhound imported into Tasmania, Gelert , lithographed by Henry Button after a drawing by Thomson, was published as a supplement in the Tasmanian on 6 August 1887. The accompanying letterpress stated that many oil paintings by this 'accomplished artist' remained in the possession of his relatives and friends but none are now known. The original drawing for the greyhound, also unlocated, was then owned by Thomson's nephew, the Launceston police magistrate H.T.A. Murray. John married his first cousin Elizabeth Young, daughter of Crawford Young and Elizabeth Martin, on 13 Apr 1843 in Lake Colac, Victoria. Elizabeth was born on 22 Jul 1804 in Orwell, Kinross, Scotland, was christened on 2 Aug 1808 in Orwell, Kinross, Scotland, died on 8 Dec 1859 in Keilambete, Terang, Victoria at age 55, and was buried in 1859 in Thomson Plot, Terang Cemetery, Terang, Victoria.

John went to Victoria in about 1837 and settled in the Western District at Keilambete. In 1840 he established a 13,000-ha run on Lake Keilambete (6 km north-west of Terang). Terang is a medium-sized rural centre which serves an irrigated farming, dairying and pastoral district located 216 km west of Melbourne.

He assisted in founding Terang's first church, the Bible Christian Church (currently one of the Masonic hall buildings), in 1863. He also built a Presbyterian Church and Manse at Terang and richly endowed it and also left large sums of money to the Melbourne University for scholarships. The Camperdown Chronicle reported his plans on Tuesday 1 January 1890 on page 2:

Terang Presbyterian Church.  A GENEROUS GIFT.

We are very glad to be able to make public the presentation of another magnificent gift by Mr. John Thomson, J.P., Keilambete, to the Presbyterian church of Victoria, in connection with the Presbyterian congregation at Terang. At the usual quarterly meeting of the church managers, held at Terang on the 3rd inst, Mr. Thomson was present, and laid before the meeting sketch plans of a new church which he purposes to erect on the site occupied by the present Presbyterian church. Mr. Thomson stated to the managers that he was prepared to defray the whole cost of building and furnishing the new church, and that the estimated total expenditure would be about £7000. The managers' unanimously agreed to accept of Mr. Thomson's most generous gift, and the chairman (Rev. S. Fraser) on behalf of the managers, thanked Mr. Thomson for his great liberality. The architects of the new church are Messrs Reed, Henderson, and Smart, Melbourne, who were the architects of the Scot's Church, Collins street. The new church at Terang is to be almost an exact reproduction of the Scot's Church, Melbourne, on a reduced scale, with accommodation for about 200 worshippers. The length of the church at Terang is to be 71ft; breadth, 37ft; height of wall, 27ft; and height of spire, 136 ft. Mr. Thomson has now been 50 years at Keilambete, having come there as one of the early pioneers in 1839. Some years ago he built the manse at Terang at a cost of about £4000, and he is now worthily celebrating his jubilee by the erection of a costly, beautiful, and commodious church at Terang. Could there be a better instance than this of the saying "property has its duties as well as its rights!"

John is said to have built the first brick house in the district. He also devised a system for reticulating natural spring water from the northern end of Lake Keilambete to his property by means of cast-iron pipes which he imported from Scotland.  His plans for a new church in 1893-94 were carried out in his absence after his death in a driving accident. However the Gothic Revival-style sandstone Thomson Memorial Presbyterian Church was dedicated in his honour. It includes a clerestoried nave, with aisles, transepts, a semicircular apse housing a vestry and an arresting tower and spire, of French character. The building remains exceptionally intact and incorporates fine furnishings in Kauri, leadlight windows and original light fittings. It is one of Australia's finest and most striking country churches.

Russell Young

Mr. Russell Young was a son of Mr. Thomas Young, one of the first solicitors in Tasmania, who settled in Hobart in 1824. Born in 1838, Mr. Young was educated at the High School, and was admitted as a solicitor in 1862. He practiced his profession until his death, and for nearly 50 years he was City Solicitor. He was elected to the Royal Society of Tasmania in 1864, and he became one of the most active members. From 1872 to 1877 Mr. Young sat in the House of Assembly as member for Franklin. Among the subjects in which he was interested were forestry and the preservation of scenery.

In April, 1876, His Excellency Mr. F. A. Weld, in his inaugural address at the opening of the Society's session, had pleaded "for the preservation of the ''ferns and forests which are fast disappearing from the "sides of Mount Wellington," and had urged that Mount Wellington should be "preserved to future generations as a '"noble public forest and park."  Shortly afterwards Mr. Young, from his place in Parliament, moved that a reserve of 3,750 acres - which includes the whole of what is now the Mountain Park, as well as portion of the area reserved in connection with the Water supply of Hobart - "should be made as an inalienable forest for the benefit of "the inhabitants of Tasmania." Both Houses of Parliament adopted an address to the Governor asking for this reservation; and the Report of the Society for 1876 records that, "owing to the exertion in Parliament of one of our Fellows. Mr. Russell Young, this great boon has been permanently secured to the public."

Mr. Young was elected to the Society Council in 1877, and he served the Society for 33 years. He gave much time to the Society's affairs, and frequently assisted the Council with his professional advice. He was much interested in microscopic life, and was skilled in photomicrography, though he did not contribute to the 'Papers and Proceedings."' Mr. Young was one of the most prominent and useful of the citizens of Hobart, and numerous matters of public interest had his attention. For many years he was a member of the Queen's Domain Committee. In private life, Mr. Young was a man of unusual taste and refinement, and he had many accomplishments. He remained a member of the Society until 1910.
