William married Ann Hutchins in 1853 in Longford, Tasmania. Ann was born in 1836 in Somerset, England and died on 27 Nov 1908 in Longford, Tasmania at age 72. They had 16 children:

The death took place on Monday afternoon of Mrs. Emma Johnston, the wife of Mr. P. Johnston, who carries on a blacksmith and wheelwright business at the corner of Steele and Forbes streets. Deceased was formerly a Miss Lucas and belonged to a well-known Longford family and had been a great sufferer until released by death. The funeral is announced to take place at the Bluff cemetery this afternoon.

Emma next had a relationship with Charles Edward Thomas, son of Edward Thomas and Elizabeth Taylor, in 1882.
