Descendants of Mannalargenna

Mannalargenna, a famous Tasmanian aboriginal leader and warrior, was born in 1771 in Cape Portland, Tasmania and died in 1835 in Wybalenna, Flinders Island at age 64.  Mannalargenna was an elder of the Plangermaireener clan in what is now the Ben Lomond tribal area of North East Tasmania.  Following the arrival of the British invasion he led a series of guerrilla styled resistance attacks against British military soldiers and police in Tasmania during the period known as the Black War. In 1829 he freed four Native women and a boy from John Batman's house where they had been held for a year.  He is an ancestor of many, if not most, Tasmanians of aboriginal descent.

While it is claimed he joined George Augustus Robinson's mission to persuade native people to "surrender", it is seems likely that he was actually directing Robinson away from native people.  He was promised that if he helped Robinson he would not be sent to Flinders Island, but he was cheated and he died soon after in captivity at Wybalenna in 1835. Mannalargenna had two wives. His first wife's name is unknown and the second was Tanleboneyer.

She was abducted by sealer John Brown who was subsequently drowned at Clarke Island.  Brown sent her to "sleep" with other sealers for one seal or kangaroo skin per night. She was brought from islands by James Parish to Launceston in October 1830.

They had about seven children:

The 2008 academic paper by Maggies Walter and Louise Daniels, Personalising the History Wars Woretemoeteryenner’s Story provides a unique view into her life.

Walter, M. and Daniels, L. (2008) “Personalising the History Wars: Woretemoeteryenner’s Story”, International Journal of Critical Indigenous Studies, 1(1), p. 44. doi: 10.5204/ijcis.v1i1.21.

Abstract

Warriors in the history wars’ do battle over the accuracy and portrayal of Aboriginal history in Tasmania, but for the descendants of the traditional people this contested field is also the site of our families’ stories. This paper juxtaposes, via the woven narrative of Woretemoeteryenner, a personal perspective against the history wars sterile dissection of official records. Woretemoeteryenner’s story serves as a personalising frame for Tasmanian colonial history. Born before the beginning of European colonisation, by the end of her life fewer than 50 traditional Tasmanians remained. Her story also shines a light on the lived experiences of that small group of Aboriginal women who form the link between the traditional people and present Tasmanian Aboriginal communities. Most critically, Woretemoeteryenner’s life is a personal story of a life lived through these now disputed and debated times.
